The Russian National Orchestra has been called “a living symbol of all that is best in the Russian arts today”. The orhestra was founded in 1990 by the world-famous pianist Mikhail Pletnev. The RNO was the first non-State orchestra of the Soviet era – a unique ensemble, among whose ranks are found the leading musicians of the country's main orchestras.
The orchestra is one of the most widely-touring orchestras in Russia, and represents Russia at prestigious festivals and concert venues around the world.
In addition to its concert timetable, the orchestra is busily involved in making a great number of commercial recordings, as part of its ongoing partnership with the famous German classical music label Deutsche Grammophon. In addition to its international touring, the orchestra maintains a busy schedule of touring in Russia, among which are the well-known “Volga Trips” around the cities along the Volga River.
